966 Texas Street was identified early on as a perfect example of the problem Porchlight intends to eradicate: deteriorating housing stock due to disinvestment and deteriorating infrastructure. The apartment complex was listed as a blighted property by the City of Mobile and was representative of the physical, social, and economic crisis experienced in that part of the neighborhood. By pulling together private investment along with financial assistance from the City of Mobile's Neighborhood Revitalization Program, the Porchlight team successfully purchased the property and completed a full scale exterior renovation, landscaping plan, and new parking area as well as renovating 6 of the 8 2 bedroom units. Today the property is fully leased at market or below market rate and tenant turnover has decreased significantly. The building was awarded the Oakleigh Garden District Society's neighborhood beautification award in 2019 and has led to other renovations along this important stretch of Porchlight's target area.
