Oakleigh Garden Historic District located right next to Downtown Mobile, features homes from the 1820’s to our newly built Porchlight homes on Chatham street and Selma Street.
Walk to Washington Square and one of Mobile’s top attractions, Oakleigh House.
The neighborhood has it’s own local beloved Irish Pub Callaghan’s Irish Pub, voted the south's best bar in 2017 by Southern Living Magazine. And newly opened Hummingbird Way Oyster Bar.
Oakleigh Historic District District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

This neighborhood not only is lovely to see, but also offers a fun Irish bar and restaurant, peaceful park, a mansion to tour, and another park with playground equipment, large wading pool, and ball fields.

“Great effort at preservation!”

Visited mid morning; parked along Washington Square and walked around it and several adjacent blocks. The oak trees in the park and neighborhood are amazing and provide a common theme (really in much of the City). Many homes nicely restored with commemorating plaques. Great to see!

“Oakleigh Garden District Provides Historic Walk Through the Past.”

This review is of the Oakleigh Historic District, the area surrounding the historic Oakleigh House. I visited Mobile last week (mid-May 2016) and the house is closed for renovation. But DO NOT MISS walking around the neighborhood known as Oakleigh Historic District. At he heart of it is Washington square Park--incredible live-oaks and Spanish moss and surrounded by lovely historic homes. 

The great thing about this neighborhood is that the restored historic homes cover a wide range of styles and economic status levels. If you want to see opulent antebellum palaces, go to Natchez. But if you want to see a living, breathing community of everything from fabulously wealthy to upper-middle class to professional to simple working class, the Oakleigh Historic District is the place to see.
